There is fear everywhere.
There is fear in the world,
a dark smog that slithers
in the liberating air
and smothers its victims,
even as they seem to breathe
There is fear in the land of the free
and the home of the brave,
the land of slaves
and the home of cowards.
Ever since the towering, progressive barks
were pierced by the terrorist beaks,
it is safe to give a stranger a second glance,
lest smoke cover the city again.
There is fear in school
where dwells a cesspool
of excerpts and abridged texts;
no debate, no hungry minds,
where you must edit your sentences
lest you set someone on fire
and be gently,
locked into a censored prison.
There is fear in the House of God.
