RIP Youtube.

My Youtube channel just got deleted. It was deleted for spam, which I fully admit to. I do not recall exactly how long Youtube kept doing this (days, if not at least a couple of weeks), but it kept recommending me this one specific video from this one specific channel that I was not interested in. Despite the fact that I had never clicked on the video, nor any video from this channel, with every video I did watch, I kept seeing this one specific video in my recommended. I got tired of seeing it. I obviously wasn’t interested in it. That’s why I didn’t click it. (Also, it wasn’t Pewdiepie, or some channel with millions of subs. The channel only had 45,000 subscribers, but I kept seeing this one video over and over and over and over in my recommended, no matter how many videos I watched).

So, I finally relented. I clicked on the channel that uploaded this video and started downvoting every video from the channel. I also began to comment, on every single video, that I was tired of Youtube shoving this specific channel down my throat that I wasn’t interested in. If they wanted this specific channel to get engagement, they got it.

I kept seeing it over and over and over and over again. To the best of my knowledge, I had never clicked on a video from the channel before. I guess the guy reported me (or maybe it was automated), but after commenting the same thing on many of his videos, my Youtube channel was terminated. I had over 770 videos on the channel. Less than 40,000 total views in over four years. A couple of videos with over 2,000 views each.

Video editing was fun, and, of course, I like watching Youtube. But this is the final straw for me. I’m tired of dealing with such a frustrating platform. Youtube’s problems have been documented for many years now (and he’s by no means the only one who has documented them). They probably won’t be going away any time soon.

I’m boycotting Youtube entirely. At least, unless I get my channel back. I did appeal, but to no avail.

I’ve already deleted my Twitter and Gab for good. Facebook will be next, if I ever get permanently banned somehow (instead of just month-long bans). And, finally, WordPress, if I ever start facing penalties from this website. It might be time to begin pulling the plug and start reading more books. Just living a nice, quiet life alone, away from “the world” as it is today (the internet). Social media is fun when the websites don’t get in the way of organic social engagement. But that just isn’t the case today. I’m tired of shitty Silicon Valley (and deceptive alternatives like Gab. See a user on Gab @Oblivia for details). I’ve just added Youtube to my list of boycotts.

I was using the Brave browser (which blocks ads), but when I used to use Chrome, I had an extension called “Video Blocker” which kept videos from channels I specified from showing up in my recommended. To the best of my knowledge, it worked the whole time I was using it. If you’re like me and tired of Youtube’s algorithm shoving shit that you aren’t interested in down your throat.

There’s a lot of good to Youtube, but this was the final straw for me. If I don’t get my channel back (which I’m not expecting to), then I’m done with Youtube entirely.

Murray Rothbard – Egalitarianism as a Revolt Against Nature, and Other Essays.

Jordan B. Peterson on 12 Rules for Life

This is a really good talk. But it’s also Jordan Peterson, so that’s no surprise.

The Wonder in Astronomy

Devin Stevens Presents Literature

“There, totally immersed in a bath of pure ethereal colour and of unrelenting though unwounding brightness, stretched his full length and with eyes half closed in the strange chariot that bore them, faintly quivering, through depth after depth of tranquility far above the reach of night, he felt his body and mind daily rubbed and scoured and filled with new vitality. Weston, in one of his brief, reluctant answers, admitted a scientific basis for these sensations: they were receiving, he said, many rays that never penetrated the terrestrial atmosphere.

But Ransom, as time wore on, became aware of another and more spiritual cause for his progressive lightening and exultation of heart. A nightmare, long engendered in the modern mind by the mythology that follows in the wake of science, was falling off him. He had read of ‘Space’: at the back of his thinking for years had lurked the dismal…
